Circuit Comparison

Northern vs Southern Tanzania Safari Circuit

Tanzania's safari country splits into two very different circuits. Neither is "better" — they suit different priorities, budgets and travel dates.

Northern: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire Southern: Nyerere, Ruaha, Mikumi
THE SHORT VERSION

Two Circuits, Two Very Different Safaris

The Northern Circuit — Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara — is Tanzania's most famous safari country: the Great Migration, the highest wildlife density, and the widest choice of camps and lodges. It's also the busiest and the most expensive. The Southern Circuit — Nyerere, Ruaha and Mikumi — covers a larger, wilder area with a fraction of the vehicles, at a noticeably lower cost.

You don't have to choose just one. Some of our guests combine a short Northern Circuit safari with a few days in the quieter south — though most trips focus on one circuit to avoid excess driving and internal flights.

FAMOUS & BUSY

Northern Circuit

  • Best for: first-time visitors and the Great Migration.
  • Parks: Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Lake Manyara.
  • Wildlife density: the highest in Tanzania, with reliable Big Five sightings.
  • Trade-off: more vehicles at popular sightings, especially in peak season (Jun–Oct).
  • Access: short road transfers between parks from Arusha, plus easy onward flights to Zanzibar.

WILD & QUIET

Southern Circuit

  • Best for: repeat safari-goers and travellers who value solitude over ticking off the "big names".
  • Parks: Nyerere (formerly Selous), Ruaha, Mikumi.
  • Signature experience: boat safaris on the Rufiji River in Nyerere — not available in the north.
  • Trade-off: fewer camps and flights, so logistics take a little more planning.
  • Access: short flights from Dar es Salaam, which also connects easily to Zanzibar and Mafia Island.
STILL UNSURE?

A Quick Way to Decide

First Safari

Go North

If this is your first time on safari and you want the highest odds of Big Five and migration sightings, the Northern Circuit is the safer, more proven choice.

Value & Solitude

Go South

If you'd rather spend a day without seeing another vehicle, and want more safari for your budget, the Southern Circuit delivers exceptional value.

Beach Add-On

Either Works

Both circuits connect easily to a Zanzibar or Mafia Island beach extension — see our safari + beach planning guide.
